Mandatory Day Off Policy
As of August 1, 2019, and in accordance with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, the California Pacific Conference, along with the Council for Student Athletes and Association of Student Athletes, Soka University of America Athletics adheres to a mandatory day-off per week policy for all of its student-athletes within each team’s specified and scheduled 24-week season. As per the NAIA, a week is defined as Monday (12:00am) through Sunday (11:59pm) within a seven-day period of practice and competition.
A practice is any activity organized and/or directed by any member of the coaching staff in which either (a) appropriate equipment is used or (b) instruction and/or evaluation of the athlete takes place.
Activities that are considered a practice as defined by the NAIA:
- Film sessions involving a coach and one or more student-athlete.
- Walkthrough drills, regardless of the use of equipment.
- Individual skills workouts (batting practice, putting lessons, etc.) involving a member of the coaching staff.
- Open gyms that are closed to the public and attended by a member of the coaching staff.
- Sport specific activity classes only available to invited students.
Soka Athletics believes in the value of providing a day-off each week for all athletically related activity, and trusts that it will result in both mental and physical benefits for the overall student-athlete experience. Normal Communication with coaches, teammates, athletic department personnel, is permitted along with any and all interactions with sports medicine professionals. Any violations or questions regarding this policy should be reported to the Director of Athletics, Mike Moore.
