Gaastra will be looked upon to lead the Lions as team captain this season...he will lead by example and by his work ethic.
2014-2015 Season
Competed in the 200 Freestyle, 200 Backstroke, 100 Backstroke...Went to NAIA Nationals in each event......Helped set the relay school record in the 200 yard Medley Relay, 200 400 and 800 Freestyle Relay...Studied abroad in Shanghai China
2013-2014 Season
Competed in the 200 Freestyle, 200 Backstroke, 100 Backstroke...Set the School record in the200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:00.63... Competed in the 200 Freestyle, 200 Backstroke, 100 Backstroke at NAIA Nationals...earned Most Outstanding Male Soka Swimmer.
2012-2013 Season
Competed in the 200 Freestyle, 200 Backstroke, and 100 Backstroke...set the school record in the 200 Back stroke with a time of 1:51.30...Placed 4th in the 200 Backstroke at NAIA Nationals...earned Soka University Male Athlete of the Year and Most Outstanding Male Soka Swimmer.
High School
Attended Lahaina Luna High School... four year member of the varsity swim team...Received Most Valuable Swimmer Award and Most Distinguished Athlete for the Luna's...won the 200 Backstroke at the Hawaii Age Group State Championships multiple time and consistently finished in the top eight finishers in each event...active in Student Government and Independent Research..

Born in Wettingen, Switzerland...Moved to Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii at age three...parents Alfred and Ericka Gaastra...one sibling, younger brother, Jared, who like Josh is a very accomplished swimmer...also considered attending University of California San Diego before he selected Soka University as his top college of choice...concentration in Humanities...speaks Chinese...swam for the Lahaina Swim Club
