De Groot made an incredible comeback when he returned to the pitch this August after suffering a season-ending injury during last season's Cal Pac Conference match against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Through dedication, perseverance, and diligence in following his post-surgery rehabilitation plan, De Groot successfully recovered and returned to play stronger and fitter than ever before. De Groot opened up his season earning team captain honors, along with scoring his second career hat trick and combining for 14 points in three games.  

"De Groot has exemplified what we look for from our Student-Athletes both on and off the pitch thus far this season," said Assistant Director of Athletics Erica Baldaray. "He has shown maturity and selflessness with his play, and as a team captain he is leading by example. He is constantly striving to improve upon his previous performances; and has shown maturity, growth, and an exceptional work ethic that has been highlighted with his performances on the field this past month which is why he has been selected as one of August's Lions of the Month."
