Lady Lions Held Scoreless in 6-0 Loss to Athenas

ALISO VIEJO, CA- The Soka University Lady Lions dropped their second match of the 2018 season 6-0 to the Claremont McKenna- Harvey Mudd- Scripps College Athenas Friday night at the Lion's Den Soccer Stadium.

Athenas' striker Sarah Tocher put her side on the scoreboard early, after finding herself on the end of a deep, penetrating pass behind Soka's defense from teammate Rhiann Holman 17 minutes into the match.

Twenty minutes later, Soka's Kiana Dinsmore turned with the ball at her feet 25-yards outside of the goal, and took her shot from distance to challenge the Athenas' goalkeeper Claire Hamson.  Hamson made the save to thwart the Lady Lions' offensive effort.

With two minutes left before halftime, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps midfielder Aarthi Namasivayam netted the Athenas' second goal. Namasivayam received a splitting pass from Katrina Ostrom from 20 yards out. She took a touch to her right around Soka's Goalkeeper Alicia Davis, and slotted her shot into the lower right corner for the two-goal advantage.

Three minutes into the second half, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Holman broke down Soka's defense and netted the Athenas' next three goals, earning hat trick and a total of seven points on the day.

The Lady Lions' best scoring opportunity came after a set piece was awarded to Soka at the top of the 18-yard box. Soka senior Natalia Gilbert took the direct kick, and her attempt to bend her shot around the Athenas' wall sailed just wide of the goal.

With little time remaining on the clock, the Athenas' Sara Catherine Ueland converted her chance in the 83rd minute bringing the final score to 6-0.

The Lady Lions will regroup and look ahead to their next home match on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018, when they host the University of Saint Katherine Firebirds at 7:30 p.m.
