De Groot Recognized as one of Diverse: Issues in Higher Education Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports-Scholars

FAIRFAX, V.A. – Soka's Yauri De Groot has added another accolade to his list of honors during his time as a Student-Athlete and member of the men's soccer team. De Groot has earned a spot on the Diverse: Issues in Higher Education Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports-Scholar Men's Soccer Team for his work both on the field and in the classroom.

Diverse: Issues in Higher Education's mission is to provide their audience information that is honest, thorough and balanced. Diverse seeks to be a catalyst for change, and their ultimate objective is to contribute to the building of educational, cultural, social and economic structures that will allow every individual to achieve their full human potential,l and contribute to the greater good of the community and the nation.

Diverse: Issues in Higher Education sponsors the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports-Scholar Awards to honor undergraduate Student-Athletes who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe, Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, U.S. colleges and universities participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership. Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their community.

Past Ashe scholars include: Baylor University's Robert Griffin III (2011); the University of Tennessee's Kara Lawson (2003); San Diego State University's Marshall Faulk (1993); and the University of Kansas' Jaque Vaughn (1996), just to name a few scholar-athletes who have gone on to achieve great success. A scholar and athlete, Ashe sought to expand opportunities for young people. Each year Diverse: Issues In Higher Education invites every postsecondary institution in the country to participate in this awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars.

De Groot is the fourth Soka Lion to earn this honor, joining Taylor Hollis (2016/Women's Soccer, Track & Field, and Women's Golf), Jordan Lindsey (2017/ Men's Track & Field), and Natalia Gilbert (2018, Women's Soccer).
