Lions Score 3 in Program-First Win Over Marymount Mariners

ALISO VIEJO, CA- The Lions faced the Marymount California University Mariners for the 18th time since their initial meeting on Sept. 3, 2010. Despite receiving two forfeited wins against Marymount during their 2016 season, Soka defeated the Marymount California Mariners for the first time in program history 3-1 at the Lions' Den Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Lions were the first to get on the scoreboard in the 32nd minute after Mikey Venezia netted his first career goal for the Lions. Venezia's goal stemmed from a crafty set piece from Soka. Both Gera De La Torre and Bryan Palpallatoc were on the ball, and Palpallatoc's deceptive run created the space for De La Torre to bend his service mid-goal connecting with Venezia, who finished first-time.

Eight minutes later, Soka's Noah Alexander bravely challenged for a loose ball inside the box where he was fouled by Marymount's goalkeeper, earning the Lions a penalty kick. Soka's Alex Tavarez stepped up to the spot and slotted his shot into the goal giving Soka the 2-0 advantage at halftime.

In the 70th minute, Marymount's Gianluca Mazza converted his chance to put his side on the scoreboard, but the Lions scored their insurance goal with five minutes remaining in regulation play. Soka's third goal evolved after De La Torre's free-kick once again connected with Venezia, whose challenge deflected off the keeper to Jesus Cabrera. Cabrera placed his shot low, finishing his first goal of the 2021 season and bringing the final score to 3-1.

"The team was absolutely immense in their performance today," said Head Coach Shawn Beyer. "Full credit to them for their determination and gritty defensive work to get Soka's first-ever win against Marymount. They should enjoy the result today, but we must also prepare quickly for our next Cal Pac Conference match against La Sierra University on Thursday."

The Lions travel to Riverside, CA, on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021, to take on the Golden Eagles of La Sierra University. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
