PASADENA, CA- The Lions defeated the Sea Beggars of Providence Christian College 3-0 on Saturday afternoon, bringing their overall record to 6-5 and 4-1 in California Pacific Conference play.
Gera De La Torre netted all three of the Lions' goals, converting his chances in the 19
th, 43
rd, and 67
th minutes, while stellar defensive play from Soka generated their third shutout of the 2021 season. Additionally, this afternoon's 3-0 win marks the 46
th shutout in Soka men's soccer program history.
De La Torre produced his second hat trick of the season, tallying a super hat trick (4 goals) against the Sea Beggars in their last meeting on Sept. 23, 2021. This is now the fifth time in his career where De La Torre has scored three or more goals in a game (Multnomah College (3 goals) on Aug. 24, 2019; Cal Maritime Academy (4 goals) on Sept. 28, 2019; and against Sierra Nevada College (4 goals) on Nov. 3, 2019).
"It was a good showing from the team today," said Head Coach
Shawn Beyer. "Clean sheets are always worth mentioning, so credit to the team for accomplishing that today. We may have wanted to finish a few more opportunities, but it was a convincing performance nonetheless. The contribution from the first and second years is also worth noting. Hats off to them for their continued impact on our already successful season."
The Lions return home on Thurs. Oct. 23, 2021, when they host the University of Antelope Valley Pioneers. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
