LOS ANGELES, CA- The Soka University Lions fell to the Mariners of Marymount University on Friday evening at El Camino College.
The Mariners were the first to get on the scoreboard 32 minutes into the match after Leonardo Velazco hit a half-volley into the Upper-V of the back post off of a throw-in from Ricardo Cam De Solar.
Four minutes later, the Mariners converted their second goal after Leonel Perez finished first-time off of a cross from the flank.
With eleven minutes left in the first half of play, Marymount netted their third goal after a counter-attack led to Gianluca Mazza finishing his chance low and into the right corner, giving the Mariners the 3-0 lead at the end of the first 45 minutes of play.
The Lions conceded two more goals in the second half, bringing the final score to 5-0.
"It wasn't our day," said Head Coach
Shawn Beyer. "We had difficulty playing out against the press of Marymount and the speed of play on both sides of the ball was lacking for us. We struggled to get a foothold in the game. We will need to level up for our final match of the season and be more dominant on both sides of the ball. Fortunately for us, there is much to play for on Sunday."
On Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021, the Lions will return home to host the La Sierra Golden Eagles. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. Before kickoff, the Lions will honor their five graduating seniors,
Gera De La Torre,
Harry Gilmer,
Riley Grosso,
Yuichi Kawaii, and
Zach Engfelt. Senior game walkouts will begin at 11:05 a.m
