ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — The Soka University women's soccer team cruised to a 4–0 shutout win over the University of Providence on Tuesday, getting goals from four different players in a dominant performance at both ends of the field.
Jeanna Ceja opened the scoring in the 13th minute, finishing off a pass that credited both Bijou Bolton and Sienna Gomez with assists for her first goal of the match. Sabrina Benjamin extended the lead to 2–0 in the 54th minute. Jonalynn Valles made it 3–0 in the 62nd minute, converting a penalty kick, and Arlene Yepez capped the scoring in the 70th minute to make it 4–0.
Soka controlled the match statistically from start to finish, out-shooting Providence 18–10 for the game and doubling up the visitors on shots on goal, 10–5. The Lions also won the corner kick battle, 4–3. Goalkeeper Lillian Dukes made 5 saves to preserve the shutout, stopping shots from Jaelyn Chandonnet, Autumn Apana-Purcell, Peyton Schmauch and Mattiah Murillo.
"Nice for the girls to get the win today! Over the last few games, we have been managing minutes in order to get the full squad up to match fitness rather than focusing purely on results," said head coach Liam Delury. "Today, I thought the girls put in a very mature performance throughout the game, and it was nice to see them carry out the game plan in terms of our movement off the ball. A lot of forward runs, players rotating, dropping into pockets to provide options to go forward, and at times we were very fluid."
"Congrats to Bijou on her first collegiate start and her first assist!" added Delury.
The win also marked the first as head coach for Liam Delury, who picked up his maiden victory at the helm in his third match leading the program.
