ALISO VIEJO, CA- The Soka University Lady Lions were defeated by the Marymount California University Mariners 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Lion's Den Soccer Stadium.
Marymount's Emily Atkinson netted both of the Mariners' goals, scoring her first in the 17
th minute of the match. The Mariners capitalized off of Soka turnover, as Atkinson intercepted Soka goal keeper
Ashley Bustamante's goal kick from 25 yard out. Atkinson collected the ball out of the air, took a touch to her left, and placed her shot low, and into the back post for the early 1-0 lead.
In the 27
th minute, Soka's
Jordan Pritzl created a dangerous scoring opportunity, but, Marymount's Elise Padilla blocked Prtizl's shot to hold on to the lead for the remainder of the first half.
The Lady Lions came out in full force during the second half, outshooting the Mariners 7-6, with solid looks on frame from
Natalia Gilbert,
Jenna Jenson, and
Rhea Hartwell. Despite Soka's attacking chances, the Mariners were able to fend off the Lady Lion's attempts to put the ball in the back of the net.
With less than ten minutes left in the match, Atkinson tallied an insurance goal for the Mariners, which stemmed from a one-two combination with Andrea Alvarez inside the 18-yard box. Atkinson finished her shot low, and to the right of Soka's
Alicia Davis for the Mariners' 2-0 victory.
The Lady Lions will continue California Pacific Conference play on the road when they face the Providence Christian College Sea Beggars in Pasadena, CA, on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.
