ALISO VIEJO, CA- The Soka University Lady Lions shut out the University of Laverne Leopards 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Lion's Den Soccer Stadium.
Soka's first-year striker
Araceli Soto-Garcia scored the game-winning goal 14 minutes into the match after she dispossessed the Leopards center back inside of the 18-yard box. Soto gained possession, cut the ball to her left, and placed her shot low and into the back post to give the Lady Lions the 1-0 lead.
Sophomore striker
Yuka Hombo added the insurance goal in the 31
st minute, after sophomore
Merina Addonigio connected her pass to first-year Roxanna Ortiz. Ortiz pulled her pass across the mouth of the goal, and Hombo slid and poked her shot into the net, bringing the score to 2-0. Â
The Leopards created a scoring opportunity with only 23 minutes left to play in the match, but Soka's
Camryn Finnell came up with the save . She combed with
Ashley Bustamante for the Lady Lions first shutout of the 2019 season.
"This was an outstanding team performance today," said Head Coach
David McLeish. "Our program is having a tremendous start to our campaign, and our coaching staff is extremely proud of the way they are performing game in and game out."
Up next, the Lady Lions host CalTech on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2019. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
