ANGWIN, CA- The Soka Lions could not push past Pacific Union College after the Pioneers scored the golden goal six minutes into the first overtime period, lifting their side to the 3-2 victory in Angwin, CA.
Soka's
Araceli Soto-Garcia tallied both of the Lions' goals, scoring in the 15
th and 30
th minutes of the game, respectively. Her first goal stemmed from a pass from
Micaela Lafrenz, who tallied her second career assist for the Lions. Soto-Garcia's second goal evolved from a service into the box from
Iris Cox. Cox's cross connected with Soto-Garcia, who drove her shot into the goal at the 29:48 minute mark.
Despite the Lions controlling the majority of possession, the Pioneers answered back, scoring two regulation time goals as well, sending the match into overtime, and ultimately netting the game-winner in the 96
th minute of play.
"It was a heartbreaking loss today in overtime," said Head Coach
Wendy Espejel. "The players left their hearts out on the field. We created some great chances and controlled the game, but that did not assure us the win. We are very proud of this team for their hard work."
The Lions return home to the Lions' Den Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2021, to host Marymount California University. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
