Lions Unable to Push Past Pioneers

ALISO VIEJO, CA- The Lions were unable to push past the University of Antelope Valley Pioneers on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-1.

The Pioneers were the first to get on the scoreboard in the 35th minute after Maleyna Corona connected her pass to Angela Mazariegos. Mazariegos netted her shot past an outstretched Ashley Bustamante.

Soka's Kamry Aragon answered back in the 65th minute after the Lions were awarded a penalty kick. Aragon converted her chance to level the score and tallied her first career goal for the Lions.

Antelope Valley's Corona assisted Jacqueline Mendez in the 78th minute to give their side the go-ahead goal, and Daisy Ruedas scored the Pioneers' third and final goal of the game in the 82nd minute.

"We jumped into our first conference game with a handful of injuries which hurt us against the University of Antelope Valley," said Head Coach Wendy Espejel. "Our younger players are stepping up each game and getting loads of experience on the pitch. We are proud of the effort that was left on the field today."

The Lions remain on the road and travel to Sierra Nevada College on Friday, Oct. 1, 2021. Kickoff is set for noon.
