ALISO VIEJO, CA- The Soka University Lions defeated the Providence Christian College Sea Beggars 1-0 Saturday evening at the Lions' Den Soccer Stadium, bringing their overall record to 4-6-1 and 2-2-1 in Cal Pac Conference play.
Despite the two sides remaining scoreless until the 74
th minute, the Lions controlled much of the run of play throughout the match. Soka outshot Providence Christian 20-7 and put 12 of their shots on frame.
Soka's lone goal stemmed from a set piece served into the box by
Cienna Irwin. Irwin placed her service high towards the penalty spot, connecting with
Abby Stallworth. Stallworth skied over her defender, getting her head onto the ball to net the game-winning goal to give Soka their second straight Cal Pac Conference win of the year. Â
"It was great to see a senior get a goal today," said Head Coach
Wendy Espejel. "The team played well, and we saw some great connections. We lacked a bit of patience and quicker play in the final third but were able to pull off three points. Our eyes are now on the next conference match."
Up next, the Lions will travel to Riverside, California, to face the Golden Eagles of La Sierra University. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
