Lions Nudged Out By Vanguard University 2-1

ALISO VIEJO, CA- The Soka University Lions dropped their non-conference match against Vanguard University 2-1 on Wednesday night at the Lions' Den Soccer Stadium, bringing their overall record to 2-6-1.

Vanguard scored their first goal early into the match, as Bethany Urrabazzo converted her shot from 25 yards out to give her side the 1-0 lead.

Soka remained relentless as they created multiple chances to equalize, outshooting Vanguard in the first half 6-3. However, it wasn't until the 49th minute that the Lions leveled the score after receiving a penalty kick. The Lions' Sabrina Benjamin confidently stepped to the spot and buried her shot into the goal to put the Soka on the scoreboard.

Four minutes later, Vanguard responded. Vanguard's Jena Howard blasted her shot high and converted the game-winner, bringing the final score to 2-1.

"Gutted by tonight's result," said Head Coach Wendy Espejel. "We saw so much of the ball and had an unbelievable performance. Our energy and fight were spot on. I am extremely proud of this group and their commitment to leave it all on the field tonight."

Up Next, the Lions will remain home and return to Cal Pac Conference action when they host the University of Antelope Valley on Sunday, September 24, 2023. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
