Lions Drop Conference Opener to Buccaneers

ALISO VIEJO, CA- The Soka University Lions dropped their California Pacific Conference opener 5-0 Thursday evening at the Lions' Den Soccer Stadium.

Soka went down by two goals between the 20th and 30th minutes of play. Unable to bounce back, the Lions conceded another three during the second half.

Mateus Seiki Rosa, JP Dufour, and Diego Barba each had three shots on the game, while Rudy Garcia, Adalid Oregon, and Justin Wu each took one shot to combine for Soka's 12 shots on the day.

"We were not good tonight," said Head Coach Shawn Beyer. "It was a poor performance. There is disappointment, and we must be better. We did not execute the things we had done in previous matches. We must pick ourselves up quickly for the next game in just 38 hours. How we respond is very important, and that is our focus now."

Up next, the Lions remain home to host the Benedictine University-Mesa Redhawks in their second Cal Pac match of the season. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2023.

NOTES: Soka is now 1-3-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play… Soka's Bernardo Atalla made one save, and Eric Aparicio made three for a combined four saves on the game… yellow cards were given to Park-Gilbert's Christopher Cornn, Miha Javnik, and Liam Brag and Soka University's Martin Mondala, Diego Barba and JP Dufour… a red card was also shown to Soka's Adalid Oregon.
