ALISO VIEJO, Calif. - The Soka University Lions and Vanguard University battled to a 0–0 draw on Saturday, August 30.
Goalkeeper Mackinzie Stenstrom anchored the Lions' defense with seven saves, turning away consistent pressure from Vanguard's 18-shot attack. After a quiet first half offensively, Soka generated more opportunities in the second, recording all four of its shots after the break, including two on target.
The Lions also earned a 2–1 advantage in corner kicks during the second half, pushing forward in search of the game-winner. Despite strong late chances, including a shot from Mallorie Barteau that struck the crossbar in the 79th minute, Soka settled for the shutout draw.
"Vanguard was a great opponent to prepare us for season. Our players showed grit throughout the game and grew in confidence as the game went on. The team did a fantastic job in adapting to what the game demanded, all around very proud of our performance tonight," said head coach Wendy Espejel.
