ALISO VIEJO, Calif. - The Soka University of America women's soccer team secured a 2–0 win over the University of La Verne on Tuesday night at the Lions' Den.
Carly Becerra opened the scoring in the 16th minute, finishing a combination set up by Kaylee Broome and Samantha Barrera. Just before halftime, Sabrina Benjamin doubled the advantage with a decisive strike in the 43rd minute.
The Lions controlled the match with 13 total shots, nine on target, and a 3–1 edge in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Mackinzie Stenstrom anchored the defense with four saves, earning the clean sheet.
"Fantastic win tonight, the depth off the bench was incredible, great movement and combinations throughout the entire match," said head coach Wendy Espejel. "I am very proud of the way we kept our composure and played for each other this game. We will have to keep the same energy this weekend for our conference opener in Arizona."
Soka now turns its attention to its GSAC conference opener on the road at Benedictine University Mesa in Mesa, Ariz., on Tuesday, September 9, at 5:30 p.m.
