MESA, Ariz. – The Soka University Lions started conference play on the right foot with a 2–0 road victory over Benedictine University Mesa on Saturday, September 13.
The Lions controlled the match from the outset, breaking through in the 27th minute when
Mallorie Barteau finished a setup from
Sienna Manns to give Soka the lead. They doubled the advantage early in the second half, as
Sabrina Benjamin converted in the 58th minute off an assist from
Jonalynn Valles.
Soka's attack was relentless, outshooting the Redhawks 25–3 and putting nine efforts on frame. The Lions also earned five corner kicks while holding Benedictine without one.
"Great team effort to open the conference with an away game and win. I am proud of the team for adapting to various factors and setting a good tone early in the game," said head coach
Wendy Espejel. "It's a great sign to see players coming off the bench with energy and adapting to what the game calls for."
With the win, Soka improves to 1–0-0 in conference play, and 2-0-3 overall.
