ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — The Soka University men's volleyball team hosted a pair of home matches over the weekend, falling to Arizona Christian on Friday and Ottawa University Arizona on Saturday. The Lions are now 1-13 overall and 0-9 in GSAC play.
Arizona Christian 3, Soka 0
The Lions opened the weekend at home but dropped a three-set decision 25–21, 25–12, 25–15.
Soka was at its most competitive in the first set, keeping the match close throughout and pulling within four at 21–17 before the visitors closed on a 4–0 run to take the set. The second set was a different story, as a mid-set run by the visitors broke the match open and the Lions never recovered. Soka showed some fight in the third set, opening on a 3–0 run before the visitors responded with a decisive stretch to close things out.
Kamohoalii Chan led the offense with seven kills, while
Christian Obergfell added five.
Isaac Jeremia and
Corban Tidwell each contributed four kills, and
Jacob Marquez chipped in three on a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage.
Andres Chavez provided a spark from the service line with three aces, and Tidwell added one. Marquez directed the offense with 15 assists.
At the net, Obergfell was active with two solo blocks and one block assist, while Chan and Chavez each added one block assist. Soka totaled six blocks as a team.
Defensively, Obergfell led with five digs, followed by Tidwell with six and Jeremia with four.
Ottawa University Arizona 3, Soka 0
The Lions returned to the court the following afternoon and fell in straight sets 25–17, 25–15, 25–18.
Soka showed its best volleyball in the third set, jumping out to a 5–1 lead and keeping the match competitive into the middle stages before the visitors pulled away. The first two sets were dominated early by the opponents, with Soka unable to find consistent offensive rhythm, hitting .000 as a team in each of the first two sets.
Kamohoalii Chan again paced the offense with nine kills and added one service ace.
Corban Tidwell contributed four kills and one ace, while
Andres Chavez added two kills and one ace.
Christian Obergfell finished with two service aces and one solo block, while
Jacob Marquez added two block assists.
Marquez ran the offense with 13 assists. Chan and Obergfell each added one block assist, and Chavez chipped in one as well.
Defensively, Chan led with six digs, followed by Jeremia and Marquez each with five. Soka totaled 31 digs as a team.
