Lions Unable to Push Past Pioneers

LANCASTER, CA- The Soka University Lions dropped their road match against the University of Antelope Valley Pioneers 5-1 on Thursday Afternoon.

The Pioneers got on the scoreboard early into the match after being awarded two penalty kicks in the first twenty minutes. Antelope Valley's Manual Medina netted the Pioneers' first penalty, and Canas Giancarlo converted the second for the 2-0 lead.

Medina Struck again for the Pioneers in the 33rd minute, slotting his shot past Soka's Maxwel Barainca. Lions' midfielder Leo Ortiz narrowed the Pioneer's lead ten minutes later off of a service from Carter Johnson for a score of 3-1 to end of the first half.

The Pioneers tallied two more goals in the 67th (Sanson Lopez) and the 74th (Manual Medina) minutes of the match, with Antelope Valley's Medina earning a hat track on the day.

"We were beaten by a better UAV team today," said Head Coach Ian Eggleston. "We knew their center forward Manual Medina would be a handful, and he tore us apart in the first half. He's the best forward we've faced this year, and he caused us all sorts of problems throughout the mach. We prepared for him, and the movement around him, but we didn't execute the plan we devised very well. I thought we played better in the second half, but the game never got within our reach."

The Lions will return home to host Simpson University on Saturday, Oct.27, 2018, in their Breast Cancer Awareness match. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m.
