ALISO VIEJO, CA – The Lady Lions fell to the Warriors of William Jessup University 3-0 on Saturday at the Lion's Den Soccer Stadium.
The two sides remained scoreless until the 42
nd minute of play when Warriors' striker Janelle Schuette intercepted a goal kick from Soka University. Schuette collected the ball, and threaded her pass behind Soka's defense to fellow striker Canessa Lewis. Lewis placed her shot low, and into the far post for the Warriors go-ahead goal.
Soka sophomore
Cerelia Maskarinec created a dangerous scoring opportunity in the 50
th minute of the match after first-year
Yuka Hombo displayed some fancy footwork in the right attacking corner of the field. Hombo beat two defenders on the dribble, and pulled her cross ball back towards the penalty spot to Maskarinec. Maskarinec's shot was deflected, and the rebound fell to the feet of senior
Natalia Gilbert, whose first time shot was cleared off the goal line by William Jessup's central defender Cassidy Gray.
Twenty minutes later, the Warriors scored their second goal of the match after a quick counter-attack up the right flank. William Jessup's winger Madison Leonhardt carried the ball down the right touchline, and served her cross second-six, finding Schuette's head. Schuette re-directed her shot cross-keeper and into the goal.
With just nine minutes left on the clock, Lewis converted her second goal of the game, and the Warriors third and final goal of the match with a finish into the upper-90 of the net, bringing the final score to 3-0.
The Lady Lions will return to action on Friday, Aug. 31, 2018, at home, when they take on Claremont McKenna-Harvey Mudd-Scripps College, kicking off at 6 p.m.
