Hawks 1-0 Win Leaves Lions in the Dark

SANTEE, CA- The Soka University Lions were unable to find the back of the net against the Hawks of San Diego Christian College in their 1-0 loss on Saturday night at the Town Center Park East Soccer Complex in Santee, CA.

The Lions came out of the gates flying, as Soka's Yauri De Groot scored a goal five minutes into the match, but the goal was called back due to being in an offside position. The Lions continued to drive at the Hawks back line, outshooting them 5-2 in the first half of play, but the Hawks were able to fend off Soka's attacking efforts.

Five minutes into the second half, the Hawks were awarded a penalty kick, and Francisco Gonzales stepped up to the PK spot. Gonzales converted his chance against Soka's Maxwel Barainca, giving the Hawks the 1-0 lead.

The Lions continued to press, unable to capitalize on their chances, and with three minutes left in the match the unexpected happened. All of the field lights turned off, leaving the teams, the fans, and the referee's in the dark for the next fifty minutes. Just as the officials were getting ready to call the game, San Diego Christian was able to get the lights turned back on for the two sides to finish out the remaining minutes of play.

Soka will head home to host University of Saint Katherine on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
