ALISO VIEJO, Calif. – The Soka University Lions dropped their non-conference match against the Hope International University Royals on Friday evening at the Lions' Den Soccer Stadium.
The Royals scored two goals in the first half and one in the second, converting their chances at the 9th, 15th, and 57th minutes.
Soka's
Mallorie Barteau,
Sabrina Benjamin, and
Samantha Barrera each had looks on frame to challenge Hope's goalkeeper, but despite the Lions' efforts, they were unable to equalize.
"We knew coming into this match that Hope would give us great competition- and that is exactly what they did," said head coach
Wendy Espejel. "I was proud of the efforts in the second half to show a bit more grit and tenacity with the ball. Overall we were unable to match up the areal presence that Hope showed and it cost us the game. It was a great match going into the season, exposing areas to strengthen before the season."
Next up, the Lions will stay at home to host Park Gilbert on Saturday, September 7, with kick off set for 3:30 p.m.
