ALISO VIEJO, Calif. – The Soka University Lions defeated the Whittier College Poets 3-0 on Friday evening at the Lions' Den Soccer Stadium. The Lions improve to 6-2 overall and remain 1-0 in Cal Pac play.
In addition to posting a clean sheet and three goals, Soka outshot the Poets 14-to-1, posted eight shots on goal, and six corner kicks.
The Lions came out aggressive on offense scoring two goals on four shots within the first 16 minutes of the match.
Sabrina Benjamin scored at the 12th minute on a ball from
Jeanna Ceja. Benjamin gave the Lions a two-goal advantage by scoring again at the 16th minute.
The Lions dominated possession in the second, getting off five shots, three of which were on frame. Soka's defense kept the Poets from taking a shot in the second half and only allowed one opportunity from the corner.
Amaya Gonzalez found the back of the net on a ball from Benjamin in the 85th minute to seal the match.
"The team played with more fluidity which was great to see," said interim head coach
Liam Delury. "I thought we moved the ball well at times and it looked sharp. To score 3 and keep a clean sheet was pleasing and hopefully we can continue our momentum into the next games. "
